This trip has been amazing so far, and it continues to impress. I’ve gone to some pretty neat places the last few weeks; it seems as though New Zealand has an endless supply of adventure time, even while having to fit around work! I still get that feeling of “wow, I can’t believe I live here? Is this still real?” at least once a week. It’s a pretty awesome feeling.

I’m switching up the format of the blog a little because the day by day layout that I was using previously could get boring. It would involve a lot of “so today I had work...blahblahblah”. Not that I think work is boring AT ALL. In fact, it’s the opposite and is the topic of this post!
Sorry all, this post is a little late. I’m getting worse and worse about the time in between each update! I have to do better. That can be my New Year’s resolution, along with drinking more water. Everyone should drink more water, so I think it’s a good one. And attainable, which is the real key here.
So New Year’s happened. Happy 2016, everybody! Kind of crazy that it’s a new year, but what was even crazier was that it was 2016 for me but not for any of my friends back home, at least for about 20 hours. So strange! I had to work every day that week, but I had the 31st off, so on the night of the 29th, Sam, my friend Bex (she works with me at the Flat White), and I drove up to Whangamata to meet up with Richard and Dan, who were up there while on break from work. We met Dan at the beach and he took us out to Donut Island on the IRB to meet up with the group there. It’s called Donut Island because it’s got a hole in the middle. Like a donut. It was so cool in there! We had to swim in and then we climbed to the very top. Which was a little treacherous but very worth it. We grabbed fish and chips for dinner before heading into our tents to go to sleep. Whew, this week flew by fast! Merry Christmas to all who I didn't get to speak to! It was so much fun having the whole family here for Christmas, I wish they could have stayed longer...
Saturday and Sunday (the 19th and 20th) were spent in anticipation of our family's arrival on the evening of the 20th. Luckily, I was working so that helped. Dan came to hang out on Saturday night and we went over to Bowentown to see the sunset. It wasa little cloudy, so I had to edit the photos a little, but it was still beautiful. And we saw an incredibly long shooting star. You know how when you see them they only last for a split second? I swear this one was flying through the sky for almost 5 seconds. So long. I'm sure Dan would back me up on this. Oh man, it's been a long time since the last post! Life been getting a bit hectic with work, but I'll be better about updates!
Richard had offered to loan Sam and I roof racks for the car while we're here, so I met up with him on Thursday at Karangahake Gorge. It's near Waihi Beach, where I'm staying. It used to be used as a gold mine, so there are a lot of walks you can do through the old tunnels! It's really neat. We also definitely hopped the fence and went into some tunnels that we weren't supposed to visit...heehee oh well! Also, if you go there, remember to bring a flashlight. It's dark in there. And in case you didn't already know this, the flashlight on your phone is not very bright. Friday and Saturday were both spent for the majority at the Flat White on the clock. Weekends are incredibly busy because people come down to spend the weekend at the beach, and it's just going to get busier once summer is in full swing! I was running around serving coffees and food, like literally running. On Friday we had an American couple who eloped at the restaurant and they came in Saturday to eat. I served them their coffees and remembered to say congratulations on their marriage, and when they let they came up to me to thank me and have a little chat about the US. It was really nice! |
